한국어로 출간된 책 제목은 "천국에서 만난 다섯 사람" 이고, 저자는 "미치 앨봄" 입니다.

 

북클럽에서 아래와 같이 단어 정리를 하면서 공부했었어요.

작년인지 재작년인지, 북클럽 하면서 좋은 분들 만나서 함께 일년정도 꽤 오래 했던거 같아요.

 

처음~p.31

in the spits and stutters 말 더듬이

 

p.3 With his protruding lower jaw 튀어나오다, 돌출되다 (아래 턱이 튀어나와서)

 

p.5 a lanky, bony-cheeked young man

(여위고 긴 팔다리로) 흐느적거리듯 움직이는, 마른

chubby-cheeked / rosy-cheeked / hollow-cheeked

볼이 통통한 / 장밋빛 뺨을 지닌 / 볼이 홀쭉한

 

p.10 what was shingles?

=> 여기서 맨 뒤에 s가 붙냐 안붙냐에 따라, 단어 뜻이 달라집니다. s가 붙었는데도, 동사가 단수로 쓰였죠?

단수 취급하는 명사라는 뜻입니다. :)

shingle: 조약돌, 널빤지, (개인 병원·변호사 사무실 앞의) 간판

경첩[돌쩌귀]이 달린 / (=shopfront) 가게[점포] 앞에 딸린 공간 / 산책로

1.완전 새 것 같은, 아주 깨끗한 (=immaculate) (=spotless)

2.자연[원래] 그대로의, 오염되지 않은 (=unspoiled)

clank 철커덕하는 소리가 나다[소리를 내다  ] / clankingness 절꺽거림  /   허물어진

tear down …을 파괴하다, 해체하다; (명성 등)을 손상시키다, …을 비방하다; …을 논박하다.

 

p.34 People often belittle the place where they were born.

하찮게 만들다, 과소평가하다

Don’t belittle his achievements. 그의 업적을 폄하하지 말아요.

You should not belittle others. 다른 사람을 비하하지 마라

 

p.49 It is why we are drawn to babies. 끌리다. 매료되다

 

참고로, "마음이 끌리다, 마음이 가다" 는 여러 표현으로 쓰일 수 있습니다.

3. 진동, 욱신[지끈]거림 (→heart-throb)

 

p. 180 the tremor of noise came again. 미진. (약간의)떨림 (=quiver)

 

He clenched his teeth.

1.     주먹을 꽉 쥐다[쥐어지다], (이를[가]) 악물다[앙다물어지다]

2.     (~에 대고) ~을 단단히 고정시키다

clench one's teeth[jaws] 이를 악물다, 굳게 결심하다

 

Like an unheeded alarm. (as formal form. 격식)

Unheeded: 무시된  (her warning went unheeded)

Heed: (남의 충고경고에) 주의를 기울이다 (=take notice of)
